TI and SPIRIT Cut Time-to-Market with First Client-Side Telephony DSP System that Embeds 14 of the Most Demanded Software Algorithms
HOUSTON (Nov. 12, 2001) - By incorporating 14 of the industry's most popular telephony algorithms on-chip, Texas Instruments' (NYSE:TXN) (TI) new Client-Side Telephony (CST) system solution simplifies and accelerates customers' time to market with differentiated Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN)-connected products. The new digital signal processing (DSP) system solution, announced today, is the first to offer such a wide array of telephony algorithms to designers of low-cost consumer and industrial telephony end-equipments including Internet appliances, security systems and remote data collection and metering equipment. By embedding an extensive library of telephony algorithms from TI third party SPIRIT into the DSP, start-up costs are reduced by eliminating up-front fees and royalties.
Open Architecture Allows OEMs More Flexibility
The 14 SPIRIT algorithms in the C54CST DSP comply with TI's DSP algorithm standard and can be used in either fixed function or open programmable mode. Manufacturers can either speed directly to market with a black-box solution or add their own variations. The device can function as a chipset controlled by a host processor through AT-commands sent via the universal asynchronous receiver/transmitter (UART) interface, or it can be used in a FLEX mode, programmed to perform customer user functions that take advantage of the optimized ROM contents.
System Features 14 of the Industry's Most-Demanded Telephony Algorithms
TI selected SPIRIT because of its extensive telephony algorithm knowledge, software excellence, timely support and quality of user documentation.
"SPIRIT is committed to enabling a sophisticated yet low cost solution for a wide variety of consumer and industrial customers interested in adding telephony functionality to their end equipment," said SPIRIT founding chief executive officer Andrew Sviridenko. "By combining so many algorithms into TI's programmable low-power DSP, we provide customers with the easiest to use solution and fastest route to market at a very competitive price." The C54CST DSP solution offers 14 eXpressDSPФ- compliant algorithms from SPIRIT in on-chip ROM. The algorithms include:
By employing the client side telephony framework on the DSP/BIOS kernel, TI and SPIRIT make it easy to add new functions without disrupting the real-time behavior of the telephony algorithms, while reducing time to market and costs.
The highly integrated chip includes software; on-chip digital data access arrangement (DAA) for modem applications; hardware UART; two multi-channel buffered serial ports (McBSPs); two timers; and a host processor interface (HPI). This integration delivers significant system size and power savings. The C54CST DSP operates at less than 25 milliWatts (mW) power consumption.
This new offering complements TI' s complete, integrated silicon and software solutions for feature-rich residential/SOHO, enterprise and high density, carrier class VoIP platforms.
System Leverages Proven, Low-Power DSP Technology
The TMS320C5000 DSP platform is the most power efficient and most widely used in the industry. TI has shipped more than 400 million C5000 DSPs and has more than $4 billion in C5000 DSP design-ins. This mass-market experience, coupled with unequaled technical support, gives manufacturers access to expertise in digital signal processing and extensive systems knowledge. The C54CST DSP is code-compatible with all TI C5000 DSPs for future upgrades.
OEMs Can Start Today
Manufacturers can begin design today. TI's evaluation board includes the C54CST DSP and analog DAA, external FLASH, external SRAM, RS-232 serial interface and JTAG interface. A TI reference design features all schematic and layout guidelines, the bill-of-materials list and documentation.
"The C54CST is the first to offer all these telephony algorithms on a single DSP," said Mark Mattson, TI's C5000 business development manager. "Because the framework is open and flexible, customers can extend this solution by selecting other eXpressDSP-compliant algorithms from SPIRIT and other members of TI's extensive third party network." The C54CST DSP system solution is available today for $9.75 in quantities of 10ku.
